Item Count Discrepancies Between Exchange 2000 and 2003 |
|
|
I have two Exchange servers that I'm testing against - one is Exchange 2000
and the other is 2003. Both of them have a set of identical accounts (same
mailbox/username and same number of items). When I retrieve contacts (from
each server) from the account that contains 10,000 contacts, I get the
correct number from the 2000 server, but not the 2003 server. So, I looked
at the 2003 server via Outlook (which sees 10K contacts), OWA (which sees
1664 contacts), and WebDav (which also see 1664 contacts).
Any ideas as to why OWA and WebDAV are reporting fewer items than Outlook?
Thanks in advance.

Interestingly, when I keep refreshing the OWA screen, the count is slowly
moving upwards. Likewise for WebDAV. I rebooted the Exchange 2003 server and
noticed that the count was not creeping up in OWA or WebDAV until I opened
Outlook for that account.
So, why is this happening? How does Outlook know what the real count is?

It appears as though Outlook 2003 hasn't finished importing items even after
it says it has. The "creeping" count happens only when the Outlook client
that did the import is running - kill Outlook and the number stops creeping
upwards. I'm inferring from that that Outlook is still processing the import
request long after it says it's done.
Please validate my claim. Thanks.

Are you running Outlook in cached mode ? if so you should be able to check
the synchronization progress in the bottom Right corner.
Cheers
