Hi folks,
Help! We're working on a problem with a client's Exchange server
and thought you guys might have some notions to share or could pass us
along to someone who does.
Here's the big picture: this Exchange 2003 server on a Server 2003
domain controller has a problem with incoming mail breaking. We can
reboot the server and see that the Exchange services seem to start, but
incoming mail does not work. We can restart the Exchange Information
Store service and sometimes that will fix the problem. If it doesn't,
restarting the SMTP Virtual Server seems to make it work. At some
random point incoming mail delivery will break again and then we go
through the process of restarting services again. I say random because
we haven't been able to draw any solid links between system/application
events and mail breaking. What we've done so far: The DNS server on
this machine was not configured correctly originally, and we were able
to rope someone into fixing that. We've gotten procedure documentation
on temporarily fixing the incoming mail issue from another involved
party. We see non-delivery report errors generated in the Application
log around the time that mail breaks. Any ideas?

What does "incoming mail breaking" mean, exactly? When your server isn't
receiving Internet mail, can someone on the outside still telnet to it on
port 25? What do you see in your event logs? Are you running E2003 SP1?
