I am about to purchase Microsoft Exchange Server 2003. This purchase was
precipitated by our desire to have and maintain a central Outlook "Contacts"
folder. I understand that Exchange Server will allow that. My questions are:

1. May we have a shared contacts folder on the network server while still
maintaing each person's inbox on their local machine?

2. May we have a shared master calendar on the network server.

3. Can I accomplish a shared Outlook contacts folder and shared calendar
without purchasing Exchange Server?

Thanks for the help.

1. The shared contacts folder on the server would actually be stored in AD -
Active Directory. And yes you will have a shared Global Address List
(including the contacts) and also personnel contacts for each person. The
main issue with shared contacts will be maintenance - who is allowed to
add/update them as it is undesirable that everyone be allowed to do so.

2. It is possible to create a resources calendar either in a mailbox or in
a public folder that is available to all or a select group of people.

3. Have a look at the selection of products on this page (assuming you
already have Outlook) "Sharing Microsoft Outlook Calendar and Contacts"
http://www.slipstick.com/outlook/share.htm

The inbox/calendar/etc should all be kept in the exchange mailbox, but you
can also use public folders for shared contacts, etc.

Yes, in a public folder.

Not easily. See http://www.slipstick.com/outlook/share.htm for other
options. If you have a small office/network, look at www.microsoft.com/sbs -
Small Business Server 2003 is a very good bargain & includes Exchange.
