My ARCServe BrightStore backup software will no longer perform a bricks-level
backup (information store backup works fine). The bricks-level backup uses
MAPI functions where the information store backup does not. The ARCServe tech
support finally determined the problem is with my Exchange 2000 server and
not their software. The only change I made to my network recently is I
upgraded my Windows 2000 domain to a Windows 2003 domain using domainprep and
forestprep because I wanted to upgrade only my domain controllers to Windows
2003. My Exchange 2000 server is sitting on a Windows 2000 Server with
Windows 2000 Server SP4. Exchange 2000 has Exchange Server 2000 SP3 with the
post-SP3 August 2004 rollup installed. My App Log on my Exchange server shows
"An unexpected MAPI error occurred: 0X80040154. Also ProfMan2 shows a
MAPI_E_NOT_FOUND. Any thoughts?

I'm having trouble with the ArcServe beckup of my Exchange Server too (We
have Windows 2003 Server, Exchange Version 6.5 SP1). Different errors than
you are having, but CA can't seem to help me anymore and they are also
blaming my problems on the Exchange Server. What Version of ArcServe are you
running? Sorry I don't have an answer to your question.

ARCServe 9.0. This software is nothing short of difficult to work with and if
I had it my way I wouldn't be using it on my network. I have since learned
Exchange has functionality that eliminates my need to do a brick level backup
so I think I will abandon the brick level backup and just stick with my
information store backup and let the built-in Exchange capabilities meet my
requirements.
You're really living on the edge getting ARCServe to run with Exchange 2003.
What kind of errors are you getting?

HrESEBackupSetup failed. Mount the databases before backup. Check Backup
Agent Activity Log".
01/03/05 13:53 <First Storage Group> removed from Backup Mode
01/03/05 13:53 "MS Exchange Service Message -- "

I am also thinking of abandoning the Brick Level backup.

Check this site out: http://www.tek-tips.com/ and in the search box type
ARCServe. There are two newsgroups for ARCServe loaded with questions. FYI -
I abandoned my brick level backups and set my mailbox deletion for 365 days.
I also enabled Deleted Items Retention for 14 days so my users should be okay
if they need to recover a deleted message. Good luck! Sorry I couldn't be
more helpful.
