Backing Up Exchange Server 2003 |

Hi,
I am trying to setup the backups for my exchange server. We use CA
Brightstor as for our backups, but I am running into some trouble.
I have installed the backup software and the exchange client onto the
exchange server, but when I look through on the Source list in Brightstor at
the Brick Level it is not showing all the mailboxes. It is showing some I
setup to test that I have since deleted and not showing any I have added
since.
Can anyone shed any light on this.

On the backup server you need to have Exchange System Manager and Ms
Outlook installed, at least this is the requirement for other backup
systems.
probably the same for Brightstore. ESM for the Information Store and Outlook
for the Mailboxes.

first, outlook and ems is not required on the backup server
second, microsoft has recommended NOT putting outlook on the same box as
exchange

1. I presume by "exchange client" you mean the Arcserve Exchange Agent
software, not Outlook? (don't install Outlook on a server running Exchange)
2. My advice is not to use brick-level backup at all - just backup the
stores themselves. Brick-level is useless for disaster recovery, it doesn't
purge the committed transaction logs, and it sucks up tons of tape &
backup/restore time. If you are going to use brick-level for all or for some
mailboxes (like, the CEO's, etc) do it only in conjunction with an online
store backup.
3. Sounds like the account you're using to run the agent isn't set up with
sufficient permissions. Look at your CA documentation (such as it is) or the
CA website (such as it is) for help. |

Yeah when I say client I do mean the Arcserve Exchange Client.
It is not so much a problem to use brick level here as there is only 30
mailboxes anyway.
I have looked at all the access permissions and everything is right.
Any other ideas?

OK - as long as you're getting good/successful nightly online backups. Make
sure you are!

Contact CA. Sorry, that sounds like a curse...but I really don't know what
else to tell you; it's not an Exchange issue and I haven't used their
products in a long time.
