We are in the analysis phase of upgrading our NT4 and
Exchange 5.5 setup to a Windows 2003 and Exchange 2003
setup.

We have 2 DCs and 1 Exchange server. I wanted to know
what considerations I should take when it comes to the
design and upgrade of Exchange server. It would be for
one domain only, and I am planning to implement Windows
Server 2003 as a separate domain than the Nt4 domain we
are currently using to make it like our web domain. I
wanted then to migrate the users and data via ADMT and
then have clients join the new domain.

The real questions is, what happens during the move over
period, when we have Windows 2003 up and people beginning
to connect, but we still have Exchange 5.5 running and
servicing email. How will that work? I want to make sure
that I accomodate the transition period properly so we
know in advance of any possible downtime.

Any thoughts on the matter would be helpful. Thanks!

Downtime? There's no reason there needs to be any downtime for the NT
migration.
You can use a trust to allow the users access. Change the permissions to
allow access from both domains. I suggest moving the NT domain account
information to the permissions page and replacing primary-windows-nt-account
value with the 2003 domain account value. That way the user can login with
either at any given time taking pressure off the move.

When you upgrade, be sure to have more than one GC and DNS servers
available. It's important ;)
