Does Exchange 5.5 run on Windows 2000 and Windows 2003 safel |
|
|
Hi,
I am planning to upgrade a Windows NT4 and Exchange 5.5 architecture to
Windows 2000 and Exchange 5.5.
Cost is the key driver for not upgrading the 5.5 solution. However, I have
been told that there are technical concerns about running 5.5 on 2000 or 2003.
Can anyone tell me whether I am going to creating problems for myself if I
recommend Windows 2000 and Exchange 5.5
OR
Can anyone tell me whether I am going to creating problems for myself if I

Many thanks,
Sam.

You said the same thing twice, but I'll assume you meant 2003 on the second
question.
You can safely run Exchange 5.5 on Windows 2000 server. You CANNOT run 5.5
on 2003 server.
Remind your client that support is pretty much done for 5.5. It might be
cheaper to go to 2003 now than to wait.

You should better perform a direct move to Windows 2003 and Exchange 2003 SP1.
But don't upgrade your server, only your organization (inter-org migration)
Of course, upgrade or migrate your domain before.

All,
Thanks for your comments. My management wish to try and squeeze onto 5.5 on
Win2k member servers. Am I right in assuming that this can be done within the
context of a Windows 2003 AD safely?
They are concerned about the risks of a migration. I have said that carrying
out an interorg migration would be ok using something like the quest exchange
migration wizard...And any increase in costs would most likely be offset by
running another project next year to revisit the servers again with E2K,
Thanks,
Sam.

Sam:
We've been running Exchange 5.5 SP4 on Windows 2000 Server SP 4 since before
I came here and we upgraded from an NT 4.0 domain to AD 2003 since June and
things are still running fine with Exchange and should still run fine when
we switch to native mode AD 2003 prior to upgrading to Exchange 2003. I am
the senior Windows/Exchange sys admin here and did the AD upgrade and will
do the Exchange 2003 upgrade soon.
Regards,
Martin
