Hi All
Trying to estimate the time needed to converted my 1000 users(approx 70
MB/ mail box) from Lotus Notes to Exchange using the Migration Wizard. I
know it is dependent on the network and other things but just looking for a
ballpark so I can tell my boss how long it will be just for this piece of
the process. Is there any way to make the process go faster(multiple
machines maybe)? Is it reasonable to migrate 1000 users over a two to three
week period?

Thanks

Been a long time, but for some reason 4gb/hour comes to mind. I may be
thinking of a different migration however.

For 1000 users, 2-3 weeks is possible. Are we talking man-hours or calendar
time when you say 2-3 weeks?

Hi Al
Thanks for responding. We are going to use a coexistance strategy, So I
would be migrating a select number of users each day. Trying to figure out,
being one administrator how many users I could migrate per day estimating
that each user has a 70 MB notes file currently. Would you figure 30
minutes per user by the time you migrate their mail, address books, and
verify everything came over ok?

If you were migrating 1000 user, what kind of timetable is reasonable
figuring
- everyone is in the same location
-have to migrate archives, mail, and address books
-have to keep the environment running every day so users can still work
-40 hour work week(never work 40 but the extra time need to maintain my
other resposibilities)
-1 admin, 2 installers, 1 support person
-not looking to break the world record for migration time, but just have a
good pace and a good result.

Sorry for the stupid questions but my boss wants to see a workplan on this
and I am full of stupid questions.
Thanks

I'm full of things myself. Ask anybody ;)

"Would you figure 30

verify everything came over ok?"

I'm afraid that depends on too many factors unique to your environment. The
consultant in me cringes when I hear a request like that. The admin in me
fully understands. The manager part of me is being quiet right now <g>

How about this as a solution?: Do a test run. One night, test run and get
an average amount of time. I'm assuming you'd like to do as many as
possible at a time. I don't remember at the moment if multiple instances
will run or not, but I believe that it's possible. Double check the
migration docs at http://www.microsoft.com/exchange/library for more on the
best practices for that. The help files should have some good information as
well IIRC. In fact, do two test runs of 5 users each. One on Monday night,
and one on Tuesday night. Take that average and figure out what times
you'll be working with.

In the end, testing it yourself in your environment is the only true judge
of time you'll get. Everybody else's time estimates are just valid in their
world. Yours may be faster or slower, but won't likely be the same.
