What do you think about Exchange Intelligent Message Filter? |
|
|
Hi all,
anyone has any comments on Exchange Intelligent Message Filter? How good is
it? Is it as good as other anti-spam software on the market? How do you
compare them? If anyone think it is better idea to use something else, please
make some recommendations here.
Thanks.

IMF is like all free tools from MS. It is definitely good, does it's job,
but it lacks some features like quarantine or whitelisting.

Thank for your reply, Bernd,
More question, does it only filter text base spam? Does it do HTML,
Phishing(what does it mean? i found it on a anti-spam whitepaper), URL? WHat
about attachment? because sometime the spam change the text but with the same
attachment.
Cheers

The exact technology behind IMF isn't public, because MS does not want to
inform spammers about the technology behind IMF. IMF works with a kind of
pattern file and compares message header and body against that pattern
file. So html isn't an issue, as long as the text can be read from IMF.
As far as I know does IMF not read an attachment, but I don't know of any
other anti spam products, who does that. So, attachment blocking or
filtering is an other issue, which is normally done by an anti virus
software.
Phishing is a kind of social engineering attack. Phishing means, that you
get a message, which pretends to be from eBay for example. In this
message you are asked to correct your account data and change your
password. The URL in this message you have to vistit to do so looks like
eBay, but ins't eBay. If you do as requested in the message, the attacker
has your eBay account data. But there is no way to prevent URL's in a
message.
I am using Advancded Spam Manager (ASM) from Sybari (as well as Antigen
from Sybari) with a combination of RBL and DUL lists as well as the Spam
Cure engine in ASM, which works also with a pattern file like IMF. The
results are very good, only less spam reaches my mailbox. And as a full
blown commercial anti spam product, ASM offers a lot of more clever
features like quarantinig and whitelists.
