Hi,

We recently lost our exchange server functionality thanks to AD falling
over. So we've just upgraded from Exchange 2000 to 2003. As the system
uses mirrored disks, we still have a copy (somewhere) of the old
exchange store, which includes people's emails, contacts, calendars, etc.

What I would like to do is to be able to recover all this information
for users, but without over writing email that has been received since
the system was reinstalled.

I assume that exmerge is the tool I am looking for, but given the recent
problems we've had, I want to ensure that this *is* the right tool and
it will do what we want.

Any advice and "walkthroughs" would be greatly appreciated. I have tried
the MS KB, but given how troublesome it's been to find relevant
information in there lately, I am hoping someone here may be able to
offer better advice.

Thanks in advance,
Neil

If you can get the data into PST files, the users can open them in Outlook &
get out what they like...or you can use exmerge to import the PST files to
the mailboxes. Presuming that you can get the data *into* PST files in the
first place....

You can't use Exmerge to export to PST unless you can mount the store(s) in
question....did you set up another E2k server for recovery & get this server
up & running with the stores from the failed server?

Here's one of a few options that don't require that the stores be mounted -

Why is everything MS do so dependent on everything else? Why can they
not design a tool that just accesses the mail databases as files? I
never will understand their mindset... Give me linux any day!

How important is it to have AD running to mount a mail store? My plan
was to isolate the machine from the network, unplug my working exchange
disk and boot from the old mirror disk which has been left untouched.
But I need to know if AD is needed for Exchange to mount those old
database files.

I will have a look at that should things not work.

Thanks :)

Either build a recovery server or look into 3rd party software that will
extract mailboxes from an off-line data store.

Well, that's not really here nor there, considering you're using Exchange.
If you want to access the databases as files, check out the Quest software,
or, slightly less recommended, PowerControls from www.ontrack.com :)

Exchange 2k/2003 are very dependent on AD.
