Hi,

I have doubt with exchange 2003 Imlementation , which is explained below ....

Say , I have a domain called xyz.com , we have 2 offices , one in
India and other in US

In India I have installed one exchange server for xyz.com , the IP address
of which is x.x.x.x
Even in US I have one more exchange server for the same domain xyz.com ,
the IP address that server will be y.y.y.y

So I'll be having 2 MX Records(i.e x.x.x.x and y.y.y.y) for the Indian mail
server and other for US Mail Server respectively.

I have set High priority for the MX record which is in US ....

The interesting point here is , I dont have any site or routing connector
between these to exchange server , I mean these two exchange server are
independent .

I have created a mail box called abc on the Indian Exchange sever and bbb
mailbox on US Exchange Server .

My first question is can I have this kind of setup wherein I'll be having 2
MX record for the same Domain .
and if a sender test@yahoo.com sends a mail to abc@xyz.com , will he recieve
the mail or will it bounce ...

Any help is highly Appreciated,

Thanks,
Raghu

Raghu, I have some questions:
- Do those servers belong to the same Exchange organization?
- Do you have separate AD forests?
- When you say the domain is the same, are you talking about AD domain or
SMTP domain?

So, you have a shared SMTP domain scenario.
That's possible, but you'll have to make one the servers authoritative for
the SMTP domain, or you'll have mail bouncing.
"XCON: Sharing SMTP Address Spaces in Exchange 2000 Server and Exchange
Server 2003"
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/321721/EN-US/

As far as I see it, I think your best approach will be:
- Configure just one MX record for that domain. Make that server
non-authotitative for the domain. Configure an SMTP connector to forward
mail to xyz.com domain to the other server you have.
- On the second server, make it authoritative. This way, if a mail comes
from the first server and the second server cannot match a userfor it, a NDR
will be sent and the message stops right there.

Technically there's no problem in havin 2 MX record with the same priority.
The result will be a mail delivery load balance by DNS round robin.
But for your particular scenario there's a major problem:
To prevent mail loops, you'll have to make one server authoritative. So,
imagine someone sends a mail for a mailbox that is on SERVER1, but when the
sender's server resolves the MX record it gets SERVER2. If SERVER2 is
authoritative for the SMTP domain, the sender will get a NDR with "user not
found", although the user exists on SERVER1.
The only solution is to point the MX record for the non-authoritative
server.
