I have two NT domains
One a MASTER and one a RESOURCE

The MASTER has users and the RESOURCE has Exchange 5.5 (single Site)
I plan to biuld an empty root and upgrade these two domains as children of
the root.
I want to eventually consolidate the RESOURCE domain into the upgraded
MASTER domain and decomision the upgraded RESOURCE domain.

However prior to consolidating I want to upgrade to Exchange 2003.

I plan to accomplish this but installing an Exchange 2003
server and migrating the objects over to it from the 5.5 server.

My question is --

Can I
A:
install the Exchange 2003 server(s) on the upgraded MASTER domain (Remember
the 5.5 servers are on the upgraded RESOURCE domain) and migrate the exchange
objects from the 5.5 servers to the Exchange 2003 servers on the MASTER
domain. (this would be a migration across two different domains in a single
forest)

Or B:
do I have to install the Exchange 2003 servers onto the upgraded RESOURCE
domain perfom the migration and then move the Exchange server(s) over to
Upgraded MASTER domain after the migration completed ?

For Exchange I plan to use a single Standalone Exchange 2003 server and a
Clustered Exchange server.

My existing 5.5 servers are all standalone some are on Windows NT and some
are on Windows 2000 operating systems.

Additionaly Should I expect any problems from the NT Exchange servers when I
upgrade to 2003 Active directory?

Any input will be greatly appriciated

Thank you

Mark

Why create two child domains if you're just going to consolidate it later?
Migrate the master domain to AD and leave the trust to the resource domain.

Then do your Exchange migration.
At that point there shouldn't be anything left in your resource domain that
you can't easily move over and you can get rid of the Resource domain.

We have over 60 Exchange 5.5 servers running in multiple sites, in multiple
Resource domains, on difference OS's to a single W2K3 AD domain without any
issues.

From the documentation that I have read you have to install the Exchange 2003
server into you 5.5 site then migrate the exchange objects.

I have to run the ADC, forest prep, and domain prep in preparation for
Exchange 2003.

Will this work correctly if my 5.5 servers are not yet part of my active
directory?

Can I install the Exchange 2003 server on the different domain and still
join the site on the 5.5 server from the RESOUCE domain?

I appriciate any imput.

As long as your trusts are set up correctly then authentication will work
just like it did before.

Exchange 5.5 sites and domains don't have anything to do with one another.
It is technically possible to have 2 Exchange 5.5 servers in the same Site
and different domains.
