We are using Exchange 5.5 running on Server 2000. All of our XP clients
running Outlook XP/2003 are very slow to open, it can take up to 20 seconds
to open. The Outlook 97 clients don't have a problem.

Any clues?

Do you have DNS, WINS or both?

Both, there isn't an MX record in our DNS server

DNS DNS DNS.
Make sure an A record and PTR for the mail server exists in your
internal DNS.
Also verify that the domain suffix for the exch server matches the
clients.
