Huge performance problem on Exchange 2003 |
|
|
Hi!
We try to find out nearly for two weeks the problem source why our Exchange
2003 has very big performance problems. We found out this problem if the mail
attachments to be downloaded by using RPC over HTTP (or RCP over HTTPS from
outside) and OWA.
After many tests in different physical network points, we found out that the
problem is an internal problem (in Exchange 2003 networking +
ActiveDirectory). But we don't yet know where the problem is in this network.
We have following internal network structure:
- Exchange Front-End Server (FE01) as Exchange Proxy server.
- Exchange Back-End Server (BE01) as mailbox / public folder and offline
address book server.
- First Domain Controller (AD01) has all FSMO roles and first Global Catalog
server.
- Second Domain Controller as second Global Catalog Server
Internal we did not implement HTTPS connections. Als servers communicate to
each other without IPSec also.
We have full duplex switches (100 MBit) and all network interfaces on the
servers are 1000MBit interfaces.
We have only 50 mailboxes and very low traffic in the exchange network.
If the Outlook 2003 clients try to download any file (compressed or not) it
takes these files to download very long. For example, the Outlook 2003 needs
for 12 MB file about 7 minutes( !!!) to download by using RPC over HTTP and
about 80 seconds by using OWA!!!
The Outlook 2003 state window shows (during attachment download) the
following states:
First,
" ... synchroizing inbox folder,..." it takes about 30 seconds.
After that it shows for the last download time following state:
"offline address book connection will be established to Exchange server..."
We have completely disabled anti virus and anti spam software on server. We
tested also without any antivirus software on clients. But the same bad
performance results!!!
Unfortunately we did not exactly localize the problem source. We need help.
Thanks in advance.

Have you tried playing with User Cached Exchange Mode ? In 2003 it can
be turned on or off in Outlook - it may be what is slowing you down.
Just go to the account settings in Outlook and try it both ways. You
have to restart Outlook after you make the change.

Try to force all your internal NICs to 100 Mbs

Hi,
Its just a hint.
I have seen sometimes that just disable the antivirus software is not
enough, sometimes you have to unninstall it boot the server and test to
isolate the problem.

Hi people,
here are my answers to you
TO CESAR:
we have the same system in Exchange-Lab. We have no problem in Lab but in
productive system. Anti-Virus software is aslo installed in Exchnage lab.
This software is not the problem for it!
TO DJOGON:
Sure we tried with Exchnage Cache Mode!
TO PABLO:
I described in my test before: ALL interfaces FULLDUPLEX and 100MBit,
Network is FULLDUPLEX 100MBit network.
No other idea?
Best Regards

What are the machine H/W specs?
If both systems run similar software and both development and production
systems are generally error free (assumes you have reviewed OS and Exchange
logs); them it is reasonable to suspect your "performance" issues may be a
result of Hardware being inadequate for the level of service.
Running SSL, HTTPS introduces additional CPU intensive computational stress
on the system. You didn't detail just how you configured your FE/BE setup,
the number of concurrent users or other activity indicators. So, on
speculation, in absence of other indicators...look at configuration (where
is SSL/HTTPS computation taking place, FE(?)) and how much horsepower do
your servers have.

I re-read the OP...found you did include some specs as to users, system
conditions...pls. disregard related speculation.
