We reached the 16GB Limit last night on our Exchange 2003 (no sp1 yet)
server. I added Temporary DB Size Limit Extension Registry entry and changed
the value to 1 but it didnt do anything for me. I was able to bring the
server back with an offline defrag.

The server is now up with 600MB of available space. I have since had users
clean up their mailboxes then ran an online maitenace. It shows 1GB of data
cleaned. but when I look at the store it is still the same size. Do I have
to run an offline defrag again to reclaim the space.

Also Why did the registry entry not work?

Yes, you do need to run an offline defrag to shrink the size of the
file.

The reg endtry sounds like it worked because you got into the store
and managed to sort it out. Have you rolled back the change yet?

You'll need to do something radical with the users in the next day or
so otherwise you'll be back to square one by Tuesday.

You have to run an offline defrag. anyway, a mailbox limit policy
would't harm...
