Where to install Exchange 2003 files |
|
|
Hello, I'm currently installing Exchange Server 2003. I have a split
backplane with 2 x 36GB hard drives in a Raid 1 config partioned as a C: and
E: drive. C: drive is the OS drive with 8GB available, E: drive is used for
misc. file storage and has a 3GB pagefile. The D: drive is Raid 5 with 136GB
available. Where is the best place to install Exchange, log files, and
database files. I'm assuming the D: drive is where I want to put the database
files. Thanks in advance for your reply.

Binaries: C:
Log Files: E:
Database: D:
Remove the paging file from E:. Is not good to mix random acces files
(paging file) with sequential access files (Exchange Logs). Move the paging
file to C:

Thanks for the reply. Can you explain the difference between random access
files and sequential access files? If it makes any difference, I do have the
paging file set to a set size to avoid fragmentation. I was also under the
impression that the paging file shouldn't be on the same partition as the OS
files if possible. Is this true?

Good explanation of sequential and random access:
http://ecrmguide.webopedia.com/TERM/S/sequential_access.html
http://ecrmguide.webopedia.com/TERM/R/random_access.html
And yes, you are right about the paging file, but in your case it's just a
matter of a "less bad" solution.
First of all you should really have independent disks for the OS, Paging
file, Logs and DB. Since you don't have that, I believe the solution I
suggested is the best you can have, although I'm open for diferent opinions.
