Hi Everyone :o)

Im fairly new with MS Exchange, but seem to be able to navigate and
administrate most MS products & OS. I have created, deleted and given
permissions to many users/email address, but i am confussed with being
able to administer the mailbox's.

The exchange server connects via a pop3 connection (BTconnect) every 15
minutes, then we use MS Outlook to collect from the server every 5
minutes. So the physical email must be stored on the server and managed
by Exchange.

I have found the page listing the size of the user's mailbox where you
are given the option to 'purge', also found the location of the
database 'priv.edb'.

I have webmail which allows me to see the emails before the server
collects them, and then we can see the emails when the user PC has
downloaded them from the server, so there must be away to see them
sitting on the server!!!!

+++++++Questions+++++++++
Is there away to see what emails are with-in the mailbox's?
Does the user PC or server determine whether the email remains on the
sever?
What does priv.edb hold?

Many thanks
Hope this made sence

OK - you're using the SBS POP connector. Note that if you have issues with
this, you need to post them in an SBS group (like
m.p.backoffice.smallbiz2000) as the POP connector isn't part of Exchange.

Why not connect directly to the Exchange mailbox? Don't connect your LAN
Outlook users to the server via POP or IMAP. There's no
downloading/connecting then - Outlook just opens the mailbox.

Yes, it should be. No PST files, no POP.

If you're using POP/IMAP to connect the Outlook clients to the Exchange
server, you're downloading the mail to local PST files. Change your
configuration, and then everything stays on the server in the mailboxes. And
you can use Outlook or OWA to open/view them.

Do you mean you, or the user? The user can do so already if their Outlook is
set up right - if you need an admin account to have permissions to all
mailboxes, you have to set that up manually.

PC/client.

What does priv.edb hold?

It is your public mailstore - (that and priv.stm). It contains all your
e-mail, if you are *not* downloading it to a PST file in Outlook, etc.

Reconfigure Outlook to access the Exchange server directly. If you're using
OL2000 or prior, you must use Corporate/Workgroup mode to have the option
for Exchange - if you're in Internet Mail Only mode, you need to go to tools
| options, find the "reconfigure mail support" button on one of the tabs,
and press it - you should have your installation media handy just in case.
OL2002 and up don't have this distinction - and you can connect directly to
Exchange.

If you have data in PST files, you will need to then import it into the
mailbox from the PST file on each user's computer, after setting up the mail
profile properly.

Hope I understood your questions/setup.

Since you're new to Exchange, make sure you have set up Exchange backups
properly - nightly to tape, is the usual method, using Exchange-aware backup
software to back up the mail/public stores (not the database files via the
file system in Windows). And you need good Exchange-aware antivirus as well.

Here a few good links to help you better understand Exchange Server and SBS,

www.msexchange.org and www.smallbizserver.net . For SBS questions I would
suggest the newsgroup microsoft.public.windows.server.sbs

As for you questions, to see mail within a users mailbox you will need to
have Full Mailbox rights to the users mailbox. If you have Outlook set in
Corporate/Workgroup mode then the mail will reside in Exchange. If its set
for Person Folder PST file, then its resides on the PC which I would not
recommend. The priv.edb holds your Private Mailbox Store Data or User
Mailboxes.
