Hi,

I want to migrate my current w2k/ex2k server to w2k3/ex2k3 and retain the
current configuration because of tranparancy to the users and other machines
in the ingrastructure which make use of the mail server. I do not want to
perform an inplace upgrade to ex2k3 and then to w2k3.

There are two scenario's of which we think they're applicable for our
situation:

- installing clean w2k3/ex2k3 server with same (netbios)name for
transparancy to users AND applications which make use of Exchange).
- installing additional ex2k3 on w2k3 and move from ex2k to ex2k3.
re-install the w2k/ex2k3 servers as w2k3/ex2k3 server and move mailboxes
back to this server for transparancy to users AND computers (applications
which make use of Exchange).

What is the best scenario?
Can i expect great problems when deleting the mail server object when
installing ex2k3 on server with the same name?

thanks in advance
Dennis

I think the best option is to use the swing upgrade method. Make sure you
follow every step mentioned:

Why do I think this is the best method:
1. You din't want to perform an in-place upgrade (I'm not a fan of this
method, also).
2. If you want to preserve the netbios name, the only option is the swing
upgrade method. You could just install the new server and move mailboxes to
it. Outlook would recognize the changes, so you would have zero impact on
your users.
3. With this method you have zero downtime.

Just be sure to follow the right steps before decommissioning the old
server. There's an article with the right procedures:
"How to remove the first Exchange 2000 Server computer from the site"
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=307917
"How to remove the first Exchange Server 2003 computer from the
administrative group"
