After a serious virus problem on my Exchange Server 5.5, I had no
choice but to wipe and reinstall the operating system which was NT 4.
Since it was overdue anyway, I upgraded to Windows 2000 server,
reinstalled Exchange with all service packs and patches and followed the
instructions in the MS "Installing Exchange Server 5.5 on Windows 2000
Server" and the Exchange 55 Disaster Recovery guide. While I can can
attach to the server with Outlook and see all my old data and everything
appears to be correct in the Exchange Administrator I'm having a problem
where I can't start either the Message Transfer Agent or the Event
Service and the message I get is "Could not start the Service on the
local computer. The service did not return an error."

I've spent a fair amount of time working on this and I can't seem to
resolve this, anyone have an idea?

Thanks,

- Chris

Anything errors or warnings in the Application Log in Event Viewer?

Thanks,

Hi Fitz:
What I see in the application log on startup is below, one thing I don't
understand is the message "Unable to get the AppleTalk network address of the
Microsoft Exchange Server computer", not that I believe it has anything to do
with the problem but I didn't have any Macintosh services installed on the old
NT4 server nor do I have print or file sharing services for the mac installed
on the replacement Win2K OS... not in the network components and I see no
services in the services applet that pertain to the mac.

Another note, there were problems with my ArcServeIt install and I had been
seeing some errors relating to that in the system and application log so until
I get the Exchange problem solved I uninstalled ArcServe. After that I've been
able to intermittantly get the Event Service to start however when I manually
start the MTA and it fails the Event Service stops.

Thanks,

- Chris
