Unable to receive internet e-mail |
|
|
I recently took on Exchange running on SBS 2003. It's been running fine, but
suddenly no one is able to receive mail from the internet. Internal mail can
send/receive, but internet mail can only send.
Thanks for any help.

we're going to need a lot more info than that. Usually this is a DNS issue,
has your DNS changed? Can you telnet to the public IP of your Exchange
Server on port 25 and get a response? If so, can you send mail to yourself
through the telnet session? If so, then you need to figure out what your MX
record points to and who is the authority of it if incorrect so you can get
it right? If you can't telnet to port 25 of your Exchange server's external
IP, do you have a firewall blocking it, does you ISP now restrict port 25
access due to spam (they don't know you are running a legit email server)?
Let's start there. BTW, is your domain for that mail server the same as from
where you're sending (cableone.net)? If so I can check it for you

Thanks for responding Steve,
I just took on this server, and as far as I know, DNS has not changed. I can
telnet, get a response, and send e-mail to myself. I am not sure that I was
able to find out what the MX record points were. The firewall and ISP are
not blocking port 25. The domain is clearwatermortgage, com.
I know I must be close, I just haven't been able to figure it out yet.
Thanks

Re: Unable to receive internet e-mail |

when I check the MX record for clearwatermortgage.com, I get the following:
DNS server handling your query: dns1.webmystyle.com
DNS server's address: 209.177.142.2#53
clearwatermortgage.com mail exchanger = 10 mail.clearwatermortgage.com
Name: mail.clearwatermortgage.com
Address: 209.177.142.21
Is that the right IP? When I telnet to that IP, the mail server responds
with email2.webmystyle.com.
Sounds like one of your ISP's servers to me, not your own. So either you
need to set up a POP connector to your
ISP or you need to get on the phone with the to change to MX record to point
to your server.
One other aside once you get this worked out is that you need a reverse DNS
setting also since some domains check that before they are willing to send
email to you (which means the IP given for your mail server has to resolve
back to the name of your mail server and vice versa).
Anyway, start there and let me know how it goes
