Running Exchange 2000 and 2003 simutaniously for different p |
|
|
We are currently using Exchange 2000 and are utilizing the IM functionality
available. In Exchange 2003 I see that that functionality has been taken
away. I understand that Microsoft has incorporated that function into another
application suite. However, my question is this. Can we run Exchange 2000 to
house our IM profiles and Exchange 2003 for the mailboxes? So that we don't
lose any functionality without having to purchase another application suite?
I spoke with someone from Microsoft several months ago who stated that they
"thought" that this type of configuration was possible. But they never
confirmed. Does anyone know if that is correct?
Thanks for your help in advance!

Tsk Tsk. Microsoft really should return phone calls and emails :)
Check out the upgrade and readme docs. It specifically talks about this
type of situation. Short answer is yes, you can run a separate Exchange
2000 server while the rest are at 2003 and only put the mailboxes on the
2003 servers.
Kind of a silly thing to do vs. adding in LCS or some other IM server
product in my mind, but it can be done.

Thanks for the response and info.
I'm not familiar with LCS... I'll look into it. Any suggestions for other IM
server products?

I'm sure there are some, I just haven't used any I can recommend.
Might be worth it to look to some of the open source projects to see what's
available there that can be modified for your needs.
