I have just migrated from Outlook .pst files to Exchange 2k3.
With outlook I wrote a script to kill any instances of Outlook running on
workstations at midnight so that no .psts were open when the backup started
at 12:30am and ran it using Scheduler. I would like to do something similar
and unattended, but hopefully more graceful than the brute-force app kill
method.
Any suggestions?

What's your objective?
To backup .PSTs from workstations?

OK, with Exchange you can perform online backups, so there's no need to
close Outlook.
Just run Windows Backup on the Exchange Server and schedule it to run every
day, if possible.

I have heard that using Windows Backup to backup an exchange store will
result in a corrupted exchange store if restored from that backup - is this
true or not?
Can someone prove to me either way that this is or is not the case?
We spent money on software specifically for this purpose on the advice we
were given about this issue...
:(
Cheers,
Rob

That's 100% false!
No need to prove anything. Would you believe in 8 years of experience? :-)
From all the backup software there is in the world, Windows Backup is
probably the safest.
Any guy on this newsgroup can tell you that.

that is ridiculously false...as a matter of fact, at one time NT backup was
the ONLY fully supported method of backing up Exchange...I don't believe
that is still the case, but it was, at one time...

Did you try to backup the M: drive?
Here's more information about Shadow Copy:
