Connectivity between two mail servers - one exchange and one |
|
|
I have two mail servers in my office. One is exchange and one is not. They
are both beind the firewall configured with private IP's. Both servers can
send and receive outside the network with no problem. The issue is sending
mail between the servers. I figured that since DNS also resides behind the
firewall, the servers couldn't find each other. I modified the hosts file on
each machine and now it appears that mail is sending from the non-exchange
server to the exchange server, but not the other way around. Any ideas?

if they are both serving the same domain then the Exchange server will think
it "owns" any email address that ends @domain.com.
So, if they are the same domain (a question would then come to mind about
how they each receive external mail addressed to the same domain) you need
to either create a smarthost to send any mail with recipeints not "resolved"
to the other server. Or you can say the other server manages a different
domain (it can be a fake internal only type domain) and then have the
non-exchange server set up with the fake domain addresses and then add the
domainto you internal DNS with the correct MX record for your fake domain
pointing to your non-exchange server.
Of course if the receive mail for different domains then you just need to
get the DNS right so MX records exist for both pointing to their respective
private IP's

The servers server two completely different domains. I thought about editing
the hosts record and putting in the private IP address along with
mail.domain.com, but that has only worked on the non-exchange server.

ah, if they are two different domains than it should be easy. You just need
to need to set make sure both domains are set up on an internal DNS server
with the appropriate internal IP addresses and MX records. Then make sure
the mail servers look to that DNS server first before forwarding out to an
external DNS server that will give external IPs that won't work. Just make
sure the internal DNS server isn't open to the outside world or it could
mess up your external mail if pointed to by mistake
