I have installed Exchange Server 2003 on Windows Server 2003. I have moved
some mailboxes from Exchange 5.5 (sitting on Windows server 2000).

I am trying to backup the Microsoft Exchange mailboxes using Backup Exec 8.6
but the job fails and I get "Access denied to directory" in the log file.

Backup Exec is backing up the c and d drives of the server but not the
mailbox.

Can anyone please help me to backup the mailboxes.

Thanks in Advance.

Kind Regards

Khimji

Try NTBACKUP to make sure that the core backup is correct. If that
backs up the Exchange then next is to use BE to backup the Information
Stores. If that backup up ok then go and check the vendors
documentation regarding backing up individual mailboxes.
It is rarely necessary these days to backup individual mailboxes since
you have E2K3.

Thank You Mark for helping me.

Sorry Mark but I don't understand what you mean when you said "Try NTBACKUP
to make sure that the core backup is correct. If that backs up the Exchange
then next is to use BE to backup the Information Stores."

The current situation is that we have both a NT and 2003 domain running in a
trust relationship until all users are moved across to 2003. The Backup Exec
is still runing under the NT domain. I am able to backup all servers
including the 2003 domain controller. I am able to select the mailboxes which
are in 2003 but when the backup runs, it fails with "Access denied to
directory" message.

I changed the Backup Exec`logon as' in the services so it log's on as
administrator of the 2003 domain. Then I tried running the backup of
mailboxes again but this time the message is "Directory not found. Can not
backup directory ?Khimji Varsani [khimji] and its subdirectories."

You mentioned backing up the Information Stores, but it is not listed in
Backup Exec under the 2003 server (also the Exchange 2003) like it is listed
under the server which holds Exchange 5.5.

One last question, why is it rarely necessary these days to backup
individual mailboxes on E2K3? what if I need to retrieve a certain mail which
might have been sent 4 months ago, how would I do this? Currently (while
using exchange 5.5), we have been backing up mailboxes on a daily basis and
then if someone wants to retrieve a certain mail sent/received say 5 months
ago, I would just get that particular tape and restore the exact mail without
having to restore the information stores, etc.

Kind Regards

ntbackup.exe is provided by Microsoft, free, to backup servers and
workstations. When you install Exchange on a server or the Exchange
Admin components anywhere the original ntbackup is replaced in favour
of an Exchange aware app. It's free and inbuilt.

What account does the backup application connect to the server as?
Have you followed all the guidelines to connect the account and
configure the account with sufficient rights. The fact that a trusted
domain exists is irrelevant in this situation.

Ah, the Administor of the 2003 domain does not have rights by default
on Exchange

Thanks Mark.

I have got it to work. What I had to do was in BE, change the `Attach as'
and use the 2003 domain and administrator e.g newdomain\administrator.
For the mailbox, i had to attach to a mailbox that was setup in exchage 2003.

Kind Regards
