Strange characters in subject line |

Over the past two hours we have had three clients who all appear to have the
same issue. When they send or reply to a mail message strange characters
are appended to the front of the email subject line. In most cases this is
twoquestion marks (??), but it is not limited to this.
Sophos or Antigen have not picked up anything. Has anyone received the same
issue, or does anyone know what this could be? All sites are Exchange 2003.
