exchange server requires AD.
start with the exchange server 2003 deployment guide
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/exchange/2003/library/depguide.mspx
and getting started docs, including "introduction to exchange server 2003"
at
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/exchange/2003/gettingstarted.mspx
if you do not have any experience with exchange, i highly recommend reading
the above documentation and learning about exchange by setting up a lab
environment, even on a single server (or use virtual pc/vmware), and/or
attending an exchange class, before you actually install exchange in a
production environment.
