Are there any errors reported in the Application Log? It could be a
malformed message. See the article below and check to see if your server is
reporting the same events.
293288 XFOR: Malformed SMTP Messages in the Internet Mail Service

Re: The Microsoft Exchange Internet Mail Service service ter |

I started having the same problem this week. I also have a lot of Event ID
13004 - Logon attempt from xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx has failed:
AcceptSecurityContext() call failed with error Access Denied.
If I try to restart the Internet Mail Service it says "starting" forever and
nothing ever happens. I usually have to set exchange to not start
automatically and reboot the server, and restart exchange manually to get it
running again. I think I've narrowed it down to a problem with DNS. My DNS
suddenly stopped resolving. If I change the Internet Mail Service to not
use DNS and enter an IP number it will restart and run fine until the next
time it happens which has been daily lately.
This server has been running for years with no problem and now suddenly, I'm
getting tons of these messages. If anyone is seeing anything similar or
knows any solutions, I'd greatly appreciate that information.

I'm running Exchange 5.5. I uninstalled the Nov2004 Update Rollup and
reapplied SP4. Then I reapplied the Nov2004 Update Rollup. Everything
seems to have settled down. I stopped seeing Event ID 13004 every minute.
I've been trying to keep the outbound messages cleaned up too. I'm seeing
some that have blank domains and I've read that will cause crashes.

Re: The Microsoft Exchange Internet Mail Service service ter |

I had a similar thing. All services worked fine except for IMS which kept
going down every other minute. (I had the recovery options set to restart the
service if it went down.)
The problem ended up being addressed by KB article#168883.
Had to empty out my IMCdata\Out folder. There was a corrupted message in
there and it kept crashing IMC/IMS.
Hope this helps.
