Exchange cluster DNS question |
|
|
Can anyone give me info here in this group or tell me the beset newsgroup to
post this to
Have a 3 domain 2003 forest -- Root and 2 child domains on same level
Clustered Exchange setup is in child domain
1) Where should there be MX records in the DNS structures (all domains -
root only - child where exchange server is)
2) Would there ever be a reason to resolve the MX record to the backend
server for LAN network traffic
Thanks for your in advance

Re: Exchange cluster DNS question |

Bill, understand that MX records are for SMTP servers to find your IP
address, so they can send mail to your Exchange server. So let me turn this
around on you, which DNS Server(s) would someone look at for your MX record?
Does your ISP have your MX record already? Will this Exchange server even be
connected to the Internet (I assume it will be).
Will the clients use SMTP or MAPI to send to your Exchange server? If SMTP,
do they currently have access to both domains DNS servers? I bet they
already do, so this is a non-issue.
For question 2, how many SMTP servers will you have?
Cheers,
Rod

A Unix server has our MX record at the very front end of the pipe to our |

Yes it will be connected to get outside email |

I am concerned just about my Forest which currently has an Exchange Cluster |
only
One side note I have a 5_5 Server in a NT doamin we are migrating from
currently in the works. NOT in the Forest in a NT Domain. Users and
computers are being migrated and Mail boxes brought over thru Exmerge. This
Exchange server also points to our very front end Unix DNS server Is
there a way to have push mail from the Exchange 5_5 server direcltly to the
Forest across the network instead of up to the top and back down as this
seems to be taking time not anticipated or wanted.
I guess this is my true question? What entries need to be made in the Forest
DNS to have a NT domain quickly send mail to over a network LAN
Thanks,
BillB

Re: Exchange cluster DNS question |

Ok, so your real question is not a DNS questions, but how to quickly get
mail from Exchange 5.5 in an NT domain to your new Forest with an Exchange
cluster? Is that correct?
I need more information, are you running the Active Directory Connector? Did
you use ADMT to populate AD? Does your 5.5 also have an MX record? Do you
have a Microsoft Exchange 2003 Server that is not clustered doing SRS?
I have more questions, like are you the Exchange person or DNS person or AD
person or do you wear all the hats? Is anyone helping you with this
migration?
Cheers,
Rod

Re: Exchange cluster DNS question |
|
|
Yes correct
I am from the Clustering + NLB arena, AD , and experience and understand
DNS. New to Exchange learning on the fly.
Active Directory Connector was run to import contact not mailboxes. ADMT is
being used to migrate users. Consult was done about migration but time and $
not available now
5_5 server has a mx record.

BillB
