Is there any rules of thumb in deciding how large your transaction log drives
should be compared to the size of your databases ? I can't find any info.
about it on the web

Has a lot more to do with the amount of traffic you expect to handle.
Because hdd tend to come in fixed sizes, you don't typically have a lot of
choices in sizing when you take performance into account unless you're using
a SAN and really scaling the size of your Exchange server.

A couple of 72 GB drives mirrored for a SG's log files tends to work just
fine in many situations.

If you need to scale this, you'll want to figure out what the amount of
traffic you expect to handle, how large the average message is expected to
be, and how long you expect to be able to function if your backups fail to
execute (how long your log files should be able to continue before filling
the drive and shutting down the store).

Also depends on how often you back up the store. I do two full backups daily
using NTBACKUP to Disk and then back those up.

This caused me to go back and reread this. Sorry for the lengthy post the
first time. Typical rule of thumb is 10% of the size of the database
size(s).
If you expect 50GB worth of DB's (edb and stm's) then allocate at least 5 GB
of space for logs.

As Jonathan points out, other factors are to be considered, but as a rule of
thumb (which is what was originally asked for) 10%. Be sure your backups
don't fail ;)
