Exchange 2000 information store - space required |

Having come from Exch 5.5. environment could someone update issues
with information stores running out of space
At my new place where it is Exchange 2000 I notice that the
information store is on a 105 GB partition – and there is only 0.5 Gb
left – when I mention this to the IT guys they just say its no problem
as the information will have plenty of white space inside itself the
database that it will use
Can someone advise me if this is true – and if so how do you know how
much space there is actually inside a database – and isn't it still a
bit unwise to still have less than 0.05% of your drive available with
free space on the information store partition?!

Well, yes, I think it's unwise to have so little free space on a volume in
general, but it's true that Exchange reuses whitespace. Event log messages
(1221?) for online maintenance/defrag will show you how much free space you
could recover with an offline defrag if you chose to do so.
They are running proper online backups to purge committed transaction logs,
right? If the log files are on this partition/volume & aren't getting
purged, that could be another thing to look at.
This is no different from Exchange 5.5, by the way. |

Hi,
take a look in the application eventlog of your Ex. During the night you
should find some entries about the online defragmentation. They should tell
you how much free space is in the databases. Consindering the Exchange
Databases as filesystem inside NTFS may help understanding.
You could only smaller the size of the databases on NFTS with an offline
defrag (eseutil). This requires much space and may be sensless if the space
is allocted immedialtely again. Using eseutil is many cases a risky thing.
So never work without a backup.
