I have a Treo 650 as well. When I try to use Active sync I get the
following "error while syncing: airsamsmemail.c 2549 1 http/1. 500 internal
server error" . I guess I have a couple of questions.

1.) Is there a special service that has to be installed, and will it install
on my backend Exchange server or do I need to install it on the front end
Web Server?
2.) Will it sync through the cell phone connection, or does it have to
connect to the desktop to sync?
3.) Are there any special ports that have to be opened on the firewall to
allow this traffic through?

What are the steps needed to make this work. Nobody seems to be able to
help. You call the cell phone company, and you call Palm and they just point
fingers.

If I go to the IIS manager, I can see a folder under there for Microsoft
Active sync, but there is nothing in it.

Thanks,
Mark

Dear Mark,

Thank you for your post!

I understand that you have some problems with Treo 650 and Exchange Server
Activeync. Yes, Treo 650 does work with Exchange Server Activesynce. To
make it clear, I would like to answer them respectively:

Q1. Is there a special service that has to be installed, and will it
install on my backend Exchange server or do I need to install it on the
front end Web Server?
A. No, you do not need to install any additional service on the Exchange
Server because Exchange Server Activesync is enabled by default.

Q2. Will it sync through the cell phone connection, or does it have to
connect to the desktop to sync?
A. Yes, it can be synced via GPRS, also it can be synced through the
desktop.

Q3. Are there any special ports that have to be opened on the firewall to
allow this traffic through?
A. If you enable SSL, you just need to open port 443 on the firewall,
otherwise, you may want to open port 80.

Based on your current error message, I suggest you check the following
Knowledge Base Articles first to see if they are applied to your scenario:

Exchange ActiveSync and Outlook Mobile Access errors occur when SSL or
forms-based authentication is required for Exchange Server 2003
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=817379
You receive an HTTP_500 error message when you synchronize your mobile
device with Microsoft Exchange Server 2003
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=886346

If the problem persists, I would like to collect the following information
for further analysis:

1. If you have PocketPC, does it work?
2. Please help me collect the IIS log so that I can have a concrete idea:
a. Open IIS MMC, right click Default Web Site and then click Properties.
b. Click Website tab and then check Enable logging.
c. Stop the Default Website and rename the existing IIS log files under
C:\WINDOWS\system32\LogFiles.
d. Restart the Default Website and perform Activesync again to reproduce
the problem.
e. Go to the following folder: C:\WINDOWS\system32\LogFiles.
3. Please send me the Metabase
a. Install .NET Framework Version 1.1:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=262d25e3-f589-4842-
8157-034d1e7cf3a3&DisplayLang=en.
b. Install MBExplorer by installing IIS 6 Resource Kit Tools:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=56FC92EE-A71A-4C73-
B628-ADE629C89499&displaylang=en.
c. Once it is installed, access it from Start, Programs, IIS Resources,
Metabase Explorer.
d. In the left pane, right click ''LM'' (under your server computer name)
to choose ''Export to file'', and then save it as IIS.mbk.
e. Compress this mbk file and send it to me for analysis.

Send me the above log files to my working email address
wensun@microsoft.com.

Please try the above steps and let me know the result at your earliest
convenience. Should you have any concern, please feel free to let me know.

Thanks & regards,

Wen Sun

Dear Mark,

Thank you for your update!

Unfortunately, the attachment was blocked by the antivirus software on your
Gateway server. Can you zip it and resend it to me? At the same time, can
you confirm whether PPC 2003 works. If possible, could you please create a
test account for me so that I can test it from my side.

Moreover, since it is an FE/BE environment, please send me the log files on
both sides. Thanks and I am awaiting your reply!

I have fixed this. Though my solution may not work for every Active sync
access problem it made sense after reading the article.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;817379

The only part of the article that applied to me was the last part about
Excahgne active sync, and most importantly, how to re-create (or create) the
virtual directory that EAS accesses.

The basic idea was if you cannot access a virtual directory create another
one based on the configuration of a working one. In this instance the
/exchange virtual directory was working fine, so i created abother one based
on that.

In my case. I had a virtual directory that could be accesed and had the
right directory security as advised by Palm one and Microsoft, but since
other people couldnt access it there was something corrupt about it. It was
only after i had read the articel could i understand what I had to do. Its
like copying and renaming a corrupt file in order to access it.

If you dont have a separate virtual directory under the default website that
mobile users access, I highly suggest you create one since it requires a
different set of directory security permissions than the default /exchange
v-dir.

Wen Sun,

I resent the attachment. I created a test account for you. I have looked at
the BE and FE server logs, and after renaming the current files and
restarting the service. I tried to sync. Then checked the logs and tehre was
nothing in there to macth against the time at which I attempted the sync.

Thanks,

Mark

I attempted this fix. I do however already have a folder there for Active
Sync. Is that going to cause problems? Do I apply this fix to the front
end server of the backend server?

Thanks,
Mark

Dear Mark,

Thanks for the update!

I have checked metabase and it seems this is taken from FE, is that
correct? It appears to be fine, however, I need to analyze the metabase on
BE as well. Please collect the information on both FE and BE. Also, as you
mentioned, there are no logs generated after you ran Server Activesync, can
you double check the connection between the mobile device and the Exchange
Server?

I notice that "you stopped the default web server on the BE server", we
should turn on the website on the BE to make Activesync/OWA/OMA work.

In addition, can you test http://Exchange_Server_FQDN/OMA on the device,
does it work? If not, please let me know the error message.

Moreover, I get the credential, but I cannot locate the server name, I have
tried 12.161.105.243 which is the A record of your SMTP domain but it
fails. Can you let me know the exact Server FQDN?

I thank you for your patience and I am awaiting your reply!

Wen Sun / JOJO
I wanted to give you a heads up. I was able to reapply the hotfixes and the
Service pack 2 for Exchange 2003 on the FE and BE servers. this took care
of the active sync 500 error. I was able to complete three syncs without
any errors. I have 2 more phones to setup now, and will see how it goes.

I wanted to thank the both of you for your help, it is greatly appreciated.

Wen Sun,
I was in meetings almost all last week, so I didn't get to reply. The
server was able to be resolved by the FQDN to both FE and BE server with
OMA. and I could browse the OMA web page now problems. Still at a loss as
to why the logfiles are not on the backend servers, but I will check again
sinc ethe service pack has bee applied again.

Thank you both again.

Sincerely,
Mark

I have ActiveSync working with a Treo 650. We have a SSL certificate on the server (from certification authority) and Treo can sync without checking the box for SSL in the Treo configuration. However, SSL is not configured as required on the server.

I read that ActiveSync does not work on Exchange with SSL required, but on another post on the web a guy said that he didn't require it but just disabled port 80. If you disable port 80, it does not work. Activesync uses that port according to Microsoft.

My boss is looking for a difinitive answer from somebody that you can't require SSL on the Exchange Server for ActiveSync to work with Treo 650. We have found many conflicting statements on the web.

We are concerned about using the ActiveSync without SSL required.
