Investigating Exchange behavior question... |
|
|
We host our own mail on Exchange. The other day emails that were sent in
the morning to us didn't arrive until mid afternoon. Some people even got
undeliverables... I have checked through the windows evernt logs and not
seen anything of note except a recurring error I have added to the end of
this post. Rebooting the server fixed the problem. I have not seen the
userenv error since either.
Are there things I can check besides the windows event logs for evidence of
what was happening.
We run SBS 2000 with ISA and two NICs in case that helps. We run SAVCE as
well as Symantec Mail Security.
Thanks in advance.

You could check SMTP protocol logs if the messages were accepted at all, or
dropped, or if they never made it to the SMTP VS in the first place.
Go to SMTP VS properties to find out the path - by default
%systemroot%\system32\logfiles\SMTPSVC%% (where %% is the SMTP Virtual
Server instance number, the default being 1).

.... just what it's name suggests... collects bad mail (mail that cannot be
delivered). When running Exchange 2000 you need to watch badmail - it may
accumulate messages and the system may run out of disk space as a result.
Look on microsoft.com for script to auto-delete badmail. Turned off by
default in 2003.
