I am having a continuing problem with mail being send from one outside user
from a different domain (that I don't look after) to a user in my domain and
is failing at my mail server. Although, I don't recieve any messages about it
failing and my mail logs don't say anything of the sort, but the external
user after a few day gets a message that looks like this:

Quote:
This is the mail delivery agent at messagelabs.com.
I was not able to deliver your message to the following addresses.

user@mydomain>:
Connected to <IPaddress> but connection died. (#4.4.2) Despite
repeated attempts, this message could not be delivered.

i do not use messagelabs to scan the mail, but the sender does
At first I thought it must have been a problem with them, but they say that
the message was sent to my server from thier relay and thats where the error
stopped.

I can see the connection attempt if i go into the prtocol - smtp - session
this connection sits the for about 400 seconds in the meantime other mail
servers are delivering mail throught the same virtual server, their
connection is for about 64 secs to 120, the mail is then delivered. The
connection from message labs eventuallly dissapears, no mail delivered.

Messagelabs log shows the following:
Quote:
2005-01-07 15:49:28.486735500 starting delivery 50451: msg 588050 to
remote user@mydomain
2005-01-07 15:49:28.486744500 status: local 0/10 remote 5/220
2005-01-07 15:49:29.161581500 status: local 0/10 remote 3/220
2005-01-07 15:49:29.161626500 delivery 50451: deferral:
Connected_to_<IPAddress>_but_connection_died._(#4.4.2)/

So it is connecting, but the connection is dropping. The message that is
sent (multiple times) only has a few lines... 200 characters tops. We recieve
mail from every other host fine with no problems. The problem only occurs
with a couple of users

my relay is set to allow only from the below address 129.168.16.2. 127.0.0.1
authenticated users is not ticked

Any assistance would be extremely appreciated.

Thanks
Peter

- Can others from that domain send mail to you?
- Do you have sender filtering enabled?
- SMTP vs is timing out. bump up diagnostics logging on Transport | SMTP in
the server's properties in ESM. Have test messages sent from the user, and
if possible - from other users from the sender's domain at about the same
time. Watch the application event log.
