exchange 2003 on SBS 2000 - client license issue |
|
|
I am working with a setup that includes Small Business Server 2000, on
which Exchange was upgraded to 2003. This apparently went without any
problems, except that some users are now intermittently unable to
access the exchange server due to licensing problems. I have been
charged with fixing this problem, and have been unable to determine if
it is SBS 2000 CALs that I need to purchase, or Exchange 2003 CALs, or
possibly both.
There are 10 licenses for SBS. I don't know how many licenses there are
for Exchange (is there any way to find out?). Oddly, there are errors
in the event log (posted below) that still reference Exchange 2000, as
well as IIS. These make me think that it's SBS CALs that I need. The
final error (where the user is actually denied use of Exchange) is
different, though, and makes me think it might be Exchange CALs. Any
help would be appreciated.
The errors that I see in the event log are:

Presuming you mean they have only one server, and not a separate non-SBS
server which now runs E2003, I believe that leaves them in an entirely
unsupported configuration. Time to buy SBS2003, or Win2003, and rebuild, I'd
guess.

Can't say - but again, you cannot upgrade individual components of SBS to
different versions. It's a suite. You can't use SBS2003 CALs in SBS2000. You
can't use Exchange 2003 CALs in SBS2000.
