Backup fails with mail in use errors |
|
|
Hello
We run win 2003 server and 2003 exchange and backup with Veritas ver 9.1
The backup fails with lots of errors in the log with emails that are said to
be in use, but they are not
Is there somekind of integrity checking tool to use with exchange 2003
to run through all mail boxes on the server and check the integrity of the
mail?
Thanks

Lex,
Are you using the backup software to backup Exchange i.e. the information
store and not just doing a file based backup of the Exchange server folders
?
What are the errors that you are experiencing ?
You can use eseutil and isinteg to check the state of the database however
if you can let us know exactly what the errors are then we can see which is
the best util to run.

Hello
We are using Veritas ver 9.1 , no errors at the storage group level but lots
of errors at the mail box level . error says access denied but thats only
because it thinks it is open . Lots of other emails are OK
Where can I get esutil or isinteg ?
a couple of examples pasted there are many more

Have a look at
http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/243524.htm
Have you posted to Veritas discussion forums (or talked to Veritas) as it
might be worth a shot ?
Is it always the "Sync Issues" folder that is reported ? If so, you could
have users empty there Sync Issues folders and see if you still get the
issue.
Eseutil and Isinteg are in the exchsrvr\bin folder.
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;301460 lists the
isinteg commands
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;182081 has a
description of the isinteg utility.
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;317014 has the
Exchange 2000 eseutil command line switches (I dont think 2003 is different,
there may be some additional switches)
I would dismount the affected store, run eseutil /g to check the integrity
of the database and if that returns no errors then you could try running
isinteg with the -fix -test alltests switches to see if the issue is logical
corruption in the database.
The difference between eseutil and isinteg is eseutil will fix physical
corruption where the data in the database is physically corrupt, it does
this by removing the object from the database so you can lose data. Isinteg
will fix the logical corruption i.e. message headers that have no body
associated with them etc.
Make sure you have a copy of the information store and log files before
running the utilities against them. You can dismount the mailbox and public
folder stores (if this is affected) and make a file based copy of the
database and log files.

Paul
