Using NTBackup, I can carry out a successful backup of our mail server. When
trying to test the restore to a "spare" mail server, I get the message
"Unable to create the log path." I followed one set of instructions on the MS
site which suggested creating an administrative share for the folder - I did
this and it worked - once. Ever since then, even ensuring that the folder to
hold the log paths is empty and still has the admin share, I get the same
message. I have tried recreating the share and making a completely new one.
HELP!

Not sure from your diagnostics where you got to here, but did you just
create a random directory on a local disk and then specify that
folder. There shouldn't be anything magical about that particular
input field.

Mark

All I did was create a folder on C: called temp. I found an MS article
saying that it is sometimes necessary to define an administrative share by
sharing the folder/drive with a $ sign. The first time I did this, no
problems restore went fine. The next time I got the message "Unable to create
log path" - I made sure that the folder was empty, recreated the share, made
a different one, all to no avail.

So just delete temp and then create something else, entering the

relevant local path

Already tried that. However, as a last resort 10 minutes ago tried the old
one of "restart the server" and it started fine. However, the restore
returned an error logged in the application log :
Event Type: Error
Event Source: MSExchangeSA
Event Category: MAPI Session
Event ID: 9175
Date: 29/11/2005
Time: 10:18:38
User: N/A
Computer: MAIL-BACK
Description:
The MAPI call 'OpenMsgStore' failed with the following error:
The Microsoft Exchange Server computer is not available. Either there are
network problems or the Microsoft Exchange Server computer is down for
maintenance.
The MAPI provider failed.
Microsoft Exchange Server Information Store
ID no: 8004011d-0526-00000000

Checking the MS site, it says to ensure that the services are running (they
are) and that the DB's are mounted - but surely if I mount them I can't do a
restore?

Okay - further developments. The DB's had never been created on the restore
server, so I mounted them to create blank DB's, then dismounted and made sure
the "overwrite with a restore" was checked. I can restore all DB's except for
the MAILBOX STORE which returns another error, however as this DB has no
mailboxes am I right not to be concerned about restoring this? We're doing
this exercise to ensure we have a relativley up to date Exchange Server in
the event of our production server failing, and also to test DR plans.
