Server is an Exchange Enterprise 2003, SP1 applied to Windows Server
2003 Enterprise, SP1. Dell Poweredge 2650 server.

SP2 installation on this server will not work. I get 'A fatal setup
error has occurred...'

I've been googling what is in the error logs and the error itself, and
I cannot find any information out there, which really suprised me. I
did post on msexchange.org, with a person with the same error, but
still to date, no one has been able to help us.

This is our error log that is generated:

Am I missing something obvious here? I haven't been able to make any
headwind on this. Stopped any service I can think of while attempting
to install SP2 for Exchange.

Uninstalled IMF v1, anti-virus. Still no go. Office has never been
installed here either.

AHA!!!

Turn off the Symantec Anti-Virus for Exchange service!

Also, check to see if you have any 4015 errors in DNS... Check your
event log for information. I had some AD errors, and once these were
cleared up it installed fine.

No, our errors didn't really say anything specific in that log.
Checking our eveny log found that the Exchange Server was listing the
role of another server incorrectly. Once we fixed the DNS errors, it
worked.

Good luck!!!

It's not the Anti-virus, we actually do not have it installed on the
server (call it stupid I know, we have a hardware filter running
instead, which is working out quite well).

I will try looking at the DNS logs and see what's up there.

Thanks!

Checked event viewer. Nothing there. :( Still looking for the
solution.

By any chance are you running unattended?
