Synch Pocket PC 2003 |
|
|
I have Exchange 2003 SP2. I have a new verizon samsung sch-i730 which is a
cell phone/pda. I do not want to use the desktop synch software to synch
outlook, but would prefer to use Exchange to do live synchs, like a
blackberry server does. Can exchange do this, if so where can I read about
this? How does it comunicate with the phone since the phones IP is DHCP and
the IP changes each time it signs on? Does it use a MAC to track the phone.?

I am the IT director of my co, and carry the i-730. You can set it up to
sync without any third party software, but you need to use SMS txt messages
to do it. Not a problem, but if you don't have the right plan, it can get
expensive.
You need to have verizon data plan, and a way for the phone to connect to
your network (i.e. VPN). You set up a mobile connector for your carrieres
sms (verizon is @vtext.com) in exchange. You need to set up server sync on
your device to use your exchange server and set the device address to
your_phone_number@vtext.com.
basically, exchange gets an email, sends an sms to your device telling it
there is new mail, and forces it to sync over the data network, via VPN.
I have just implemented SSL, and FBA, and it is causing me all kinds of
grief with this, but prior to that it worked like a charm.

I have to presume then, attachments are out to the question with this setup?

No, attachments work as well. All it is really doing is using the sms
function of the phone to tell it to synch over the network. Anything that
you can do with a typical WindowsMobile setup you can do with this config.
