Either I am incredibly unfortuante, or stupid and missing something obvious,
anyway following is scenario.

Am running Exchange 2003 SP2 on Win 2003 sp1 (also domain controller)

Can't send Microsoft Word attachments to external SMTP servers.

Running Ethereal (packet sniffer) and monitoring the server network traffic
have determined following:

1. SMTP server on Exchange server establishes communication with remote
server, transmits all of email up to and including start of ms word
attachment which is mime encoded as application/msword and base 64 encoded.

2. After transmitting 1 or 2 packets containing the .doc file, the remote
SMTP server issues a tcp/ip RESET - end of conversation, message returns to
tcpip queue.

3. the actual error reported back to the user in the non delivery report is
5.5.0

Have done following to troubleshoot:
1. Tried several file attachment types of various sizes and several remote
servers / remote addresses to verify that the problem is isolated to word
files and not the result of some other influence.

2. Zipping the word files before sending works.

3. Simply renaming the word file as an XLS and then sending also seems to
work fine.

4. Am running Word 2003 Professional, tried saving the file as word 97 -
2002 compatible but made no difference.

5. In desperation, reformatted the system partition on the server and
reinstalled Windows & Exchange with clean installs. Problem still persists.

Anyone ever come accross anything like this before?

Any bright ideas as to how to troubleshoot further would be appreciated -
I've looked at SMTP logs, turned up the logging within Exchange etc, but not
got anything obviously useful.

Thanks in advance

Dave
