Hi,
I am trying to setup MS Active sync and direct push/autd.
AUTD is the direct push right - that is where it converts smtp messages to
sms?
I have the default settings checked in the esm - global settings - mobile
settings on exchange 2003 - windows 2003, both sp's are latest with all
patches.
I can get active sync working with a schedule - 5, 10, 20 minutes, but the
always up to date isn't working
The devices are HP Ipaq 6510's.

any ideas?

They can say what they like, I suppose.

The screenshot is from Exchange 2003, pre-SP2. The "Direct push"
checkbox isn't even shown there. :)

Did you use ActiveSync after you made that change? The device has to
register with Exchange.

AUTD uses SMTP/SMS. Direct Push uses (or will use) HTTP.

Also, isn't this article the same thing:
avid Lemson a group program manager for the Exchange team talks about the
design and inner workings of Exchange Direct Push. What is Exchange Direct
Push? It's what MS marketing has rebrandeed AUTD (Always Up To Date), the
system by which Exchange "pushes" data to your phone. ...

Unless you've found some way to get the MSFP from your carrier/OEM
onto your device you can't use "direct push".

AUTD is the direct push right

No.

Exchange sends a SMTP message to your devices "text" address. The
carrier turns it into SMS and sends it to your device,

You have the wrong device address in the ActiveSync configuration?

Thanks Rich,
I have enabled logging now and I notice the messages are sent to the
cingular.com domain but they never reach the handhelds.
I found this article but this hotfix should have been applied in sp2 for ex
which I am running.
I have tried adding in the mobile carrier under mobile properties on the
server and also doing a user defined address on the handheld. I also did
run activesync after the changes.
I did make the regkey change on the server noted in the hotfix - does that
matter? It doesn't say a reboot is required?

AUTD uses SMTP/SMS. Direct Push uses (or will use) HTTP.

There's not much anyone here can help with that. It may be your
calling plan that lacks the options necesary to do this.

If you see the mesages leaving Exchange and they're addressed
correctly, then it's time to call you carrier and find out what you
need to do to make it work. Good luck with that!

What "hotfix" might that be?

Make sure you download and try out the AUTD Troubleshooting Tool at
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=7718A338-A9F5-43D6-9E20-141189283C82&displaylang=en
and test the email connectivity. It may have been a typo, but above you
said "cingular.com". I am pretty sure the SMTP address for cingular
phones is "mycingular.com" or something like that.

Rich, the hotfix he is talking about was a hotfix for 2003 that allows
the admin to set a reg key containing a FROM address for the SMTP
messages that get sent to the device, because some carriers block
messages at their gateway that do not include a from address.
