Hi,
A bit like the post previous to this except we need to use the same
hardware.

We have:
One Exchange 2000 machine running on Win 2000 server with about 190 mail
boxes with multiple domains in a single W2k AD Forest setup.

We want to:
Use the same current hardware - upgrade to server 2003 and exchange 2003.

I haven't as yet found this senario in the MS exchage site. Can someone give
me some advice please.

TIA
Barry

Essentially you are asking to do a Swing Upgrade to a Exchange 2003 Swing
Server then once you have completed Moving Mailboxes and replicating PF's,
upgrade or fresh install Exchange 2003 on original server then Move and
Replicate everything back. I would follow this article for Exchange 2000
but just add the Exchange 2003 as your Swing Server.

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=264879

or

Simply do an in-place upgrade of your existing Exchange 2000 Server to
Exchange 2003.

Thanks John,
So for clarification with the in-place upgrade. Can it upgrade the OS first
then Exchange second without breaking anything? I'll be taking the server
off line till the upgrade is finished (depending on how long that might
take - one long evening/night).

Thanks
Barry

Good question, for in-place upgrade you will need to upgrade to Exchange
2003 first then Windows 2003. Exchange 2000 will not run on Windows 2003
Server.

Now, with this being said and 190 mailboxes I would always prefer installing
a second Exchange Server for the Swing Method. The only issue you run into
for the inplace upgrade is if the upgrade does not succeed then you are
pretty much restoring Exchange 2000 from backup. Whereas, the Swing Method
allows you the Flexibility and requires no restore. It also will allow you
to do a Fresh Install of Windows 2003 and Exchange 2003 which is always
preferred if you have the hardware and time.

No problem, I did not want to steer you away from in-place upgrade as I have
done many without incident. Its just that if you have the opportunity to do
a fresh install, I will always take that route first. Most inplace upgrades
I have completed the clients had no choice in the matter.
