Exchange 2000->2003 Upgrade/Migration |
|
|
Howdy,
I have a single Exchange 2000 SP3 mailbox/pf server (Native Mode) running on
Windows 2000 SP4. We have a single AD forest and single AD domain that is
running in Windows 2000 Native Mode. We have purchased a new server for an
Exchange 2003 migration/upgrade.
My questions are...
1. We plan to upgrade to AD 2003. Is it recommended that AD be upgraded from
2000 to 2003 before the Exchange migration/upgrade?
2. What does everyone recommend...An in place upgrade from Exchange 2000 to
2003 or a mailbox migration.
I'm sure everyone will recommend a mailbox migration because we get to start
fresh. My 3rd question would then be...
3. What are the steps I would need to take to do a mailbox migration?
- AD Schema prep (forestprep / domain prep) - If I do this will the existing
Exchange 2000 server still function correctly?
- Install Exchange 2003 on new server
- Migrate mailboxes
- Migrate all Exchange roles/address books to new Exchange 2003 server
- configure firewall to route mail to new exchange server
- Decom old Exchange 2000 server
Thanks

Does not really matter but if you do upgrade to AD 2003 first you will need

If you have a new server then I would definitely install Exchange 2003 fresh
and use Move Mailbox Wizard and replicate Public Folders. Follow this KB
when you are ready to remove your Exchange 2000 Server,

Correct, Exchange 2003 /forestprep and /domainprep will not harm your
Exchange 2000 environment. You only need to be concerned if you run
Windows 2003 ADPREP.

Re: Exchange 2000->2003 Upgrade/Migration |

Thanks again John. I am 1 week into my new job. I did some looking around
and found that 1 of our DCs are W2K3 SP1 and the other 2 are W2K SP4 which
means my predessor must have run W2K3 /ADPREP. The forest/domain are in
Windows 2000 Native mode.
I checked the article (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/314649)
and did the searches in scenerio 3 and can up empty. I then went to scenerio
2 and checked to see if the 3 attributes (CN=ms-Exch-Assistant-Name,
CN=ms-Exch-LabeledURI, and the CN=ms-Exch-House-Identifier ) were updated
and they were not. So i'm a little confused because the attributes have the
old name, yet it appears that W2K3 /ADPREP was run if I have W2K3 DCs in a
W2K forest/domain.
Do you suggest that I run through the steps in scenerio 2 to rename these
attributes?
Thanks
