First Exchange 2003 Server in Domain |
|
|
Good evening all. I am preparing to install my first Exchange 2003 server in
a Domain containing 5 Windows 2000 Servers (each is a Domain Controller)
running Exchange 2000 on each of them. The Exchange 2003 server will be
installed onto a Windows 2003 Server Domain Controller that has been running
in our Domain for about a year now. Active directory on it is working fine.
Is there any special procedures I need to follow
(ExchangePrep/DomainPrep/ForestPrep) to have Exchange 2003 running on one
server, and Exchange 2000 running on the other servers?
Thanks for your help. I'd like to install it correctly the first time!

Just follow the ExDeploy tools supplied with Exchange 2003. They tell you
what you need to know. Basically, you will need to extend the schema with
ForestPrep again, and also re-run DomainPrep again. You'll be fine. Oh, by
the way, E2K3 requires that Windows 2003 is at least SP3 level, but I can't
honestly imagine you're running lower than that. :)

Also its not best practice to install Exchange on a DC, you are much better
off making it a member server.

Thanks Neil. The deployment went well and pretty much without incident. Per
your suggestion, I followed the steps outlined in "Deploy the first Exchange
2003 Server" located in Exdeploy.hta. ForestPrep failed two times, but it
got further with each run until it finally completed without errors.
Thanks for your rapid response and assistance.
