Hello all I have a question and i suspect someone out there has allready done
what i want to do. I have users that are mobile, and they need to be able to
do the following. They want to access their email, BUT not use web outlook,
they want to use outlook XP or 2003 so they can make changes to their
contacts and calendar and book things for others in their calendars, the
techs in the other areas said that they should have a network there and a
exchange server as well and they link their exchange to ours, then they can
recieve their email locally. Is that the best cost solution? or can i do
something on my end that allows them to have full access to their email, like
they were in the office here?

Wayne

First you would have to enable the IMAP service on the exchange server if
they are going to connect to IMAP through private connections i.e. dedicated
t-1 and not over the internet then you would have them point to the
exchangeservernam.domain.com

If they are connecting via internet then you will have to open the IMAP
ports on the firewall and have an A record added to your internet side DNS
to allow them to resolve to the external IP. The below link talks about
configuring Exchange 2003 for client access.

They will be starting new servers there they said and will build a domain
there and we have to add each other in trusts etc to allow communication,
also the exchange will work thisw way, since we own the domain name and they
just want their users to get their mail sent there.

I would love to do Imap but since i do not usually do exchange how do i
configure the 2003 exchange server and the clients? I see one of the options
is to put in the imap server name is that my external IP? How do i find my
mail server name to put that into the outlook on the client?

If you are exchange 2003 then you could upgrade them to the 2003 client and
use RPC over HTTP it works great.

If not IMAP will allow you to do most of these things.

Connecting someone elses exchange from a seperate forest is not generally
supported and I do not know of any way of accomplishing this.

If they are just going to a remote site that is in your forest then they
should be able to connect because they should be apart of the same
organization since only one is allowed per forest.

I assume you run your own certificate authority if so.

You need to put a Domain certificate on all your pc's you can do that
through group policy so each pc will trust any certificate associated with
your domain CA

I believe in 2003 a root certificate is installed by default on all pc's in
AD once the CA is installed but not sure I have not done much work with CA's
in a couple of years.
