why is email not going through Exch2K3 machine |
|
|
I just installed an Exch2K3 in the same administrative and routing group as
Exch 2000. I created a mailbox in Exch2K3 Server. I want to send the mail
OUT through Exch2K3 for this mailbox but it still goes out through Exch 2000
Server in the routing group. Why is that? How can I make it go through the
new Exch2k3?
By the way, the current Exchange 2000 is the master Server for the org.
I am losing it.
Thanks.

Sounds like your 2000 box is the bridgehead. I need to have a better
understanding of how your connectors are configured and possibly DNS before I
can give you a better answer.

If you have an SMTP connector you may want to check to see if the 2003 is
listed in there or at a lower cost. You can raise the 2000 server to a
higher cost.
This is assuming you have a connector.

Thanks Jonathan. Yes, I have SMTP connector that contains both 2000 and 2003
as the local bridgehead servers. I can only change the cost to a Routing
Group Connector not to SMTP connector.
What would you like to know about our DNS?
Thanks again.

Have you checked the SMTP Virtual Server for smart-hosts? Perhaps you have a
smarthost configured.
You could try removing the 2000 server from the SMTP connector. Are you
using MX records in your DNS?
How do you have your SMTP Connector configured? Is it set to use DNS or a
Smarthost?
There are several possibilities:)

Yes, I have checked this. No smart hosts configured for this. |

No. I cannot remove the 2000 from the SMTP connector, the production mail
flow will stop. I do not want to do anything drastic until I am confident.

this one uses smart host which is of course our RELAY server.

You could try looking at this article, also there are additional URLs below
that may help you.
http://www.msexchange.org/tutorials/WinRoute-Routing-status-Exchange-organization.html
WinRoute may help you drill down which configuration is causing it to route
to 2000 first.
The problem with troubleshooting routing via a newsgroup is that there are
so many possibilites especially if you are using an SMTP connector. You also
may not even need the SMTP connector, but this depends on your environment
and what you want to accomplish.
If I only had two backend servers (and no Front-Ends) I wouldn't use an SMTP
connector, instead I would use the SMTP Virtual Server and set a smart host
from there. That way 2000 and 2003 would route directly out to your Gateway.
The article above should help you (I hope).

Thanks. I will try to work on this issue next week and let you know what I
find.
My goal is to make the 2K3 work perfectly and then do the mailboxes and PF
moves and get rid of 2K. But before I jump to that I wanted to absolutely
make sure that 2K3 is behaving as it supposed to.
Thanks a lot again!
