I have a front-end (x1) / back-end (x1) setup and the Front-end server has
been setup for OWA access and incoming/outgoing SMTP email.
This appears to be functioning correctly, however messages from the Internet
to public folders are sitting in a queue and then getting bounced back. Am
able to email from internal.
I have a question on the suggested config of the Front-end server.
I have the Information store mounted for access however it hosts no more
than the usual mailboxes (System Attendant, system mailbox).
The public folder store is not mounted (no replica's stored upon it).
Should the public folder store be deleted or shoud it be mounted on the
front-end server to allow for incoming SMTP email to be delivcered to the
public folder.
Thanks for any advice and happy Christmas

You can dismount and delete it.
You also need to make sure that the PF's are accepting messages from
Anonymous, which needs at least Contributor rights. |

Hi,
Thank you for the input.
Regarding the issue, we may try the following steps to troubleshoot it:
1> Confirm whether the anonymous has at least Contributor rights on the
Public Folders as Mark mentioned. For more info, see the following article:
External users cannot send messages to public folders in Exchange 2000
Server
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=300221
2> It's recommended that you apply/reapply the latest service pack on the
Exchange server.
For Exchange 2000:
Service Pack 3 for Exchange Server 2000 and Exchange Server 2000 Enterprise
Server
http://www.microsoft.com/exchange/downloads/2000/sp3/default.asp
Exchange 2000 Post-Service Pack 3 (SP3) Rollup Patch 6487.1
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=E7AAA113-1403-4262-

For Exchange 2003:
Apply Exchange 2003 Service Pack 2. See the following article for more
info:

Server

3> If the issue persists, let's enable message tracking on the Exchange
server 2000:
a. On the Exchange server, open Exchange System Manager.
b. Expand Servers. Right click on the server name, and click properties.
c. On the General tab, check the "Enable message tracking" option.
4> Let''s perform the following tests to narrow down the issue. I
understand
that you might have already performed some of them. Please try the steps
again so that we can trace the message.
a. On an internal computer, configure an email account in Outlook Express.
Send a testing mail to the public folder. Does the mail get delivered
properly?
b. On an external computer, configure an email account in Outlook Express.
Specify the internal e-mail address as the sender''s e-mail address. Send a
testing mail to the public folder. Does the mail get delivered properly?
c. On an external computer, configure an email account in Outlook Express.
Specify an external e-mail address as the sender''s e-mail address. Send a
testing mail to the public folder. Does the mail get delivered properly?
5> In Exchange System Manager, expand Tools -> Message Tracking Center. In
the right pane, trace the testing mails. You may take screenshots and send
them to me(mailto:v-asun@microsoft.com) for further research.
6> In addition, it''s a good idea to create a new email enabled public
folder. Does the issue reoccur on the new public folder?
7> Check the application event log for any warning and error messages for
further research.
Additional info on FE/BE configuration, check the white paper:
