Front End / Backend |

I have Exchange 2003 setup with the front end / back end configuration. I
have a windows iis 5 server that requires smtp for asp.net pages to send
mail and it has a smtp virutal server. Can I just use my Excahgne front end
server? Is there any benefits or disadvantages to this configuration?

YOu can use the back or the front end server.
If you use the back end and configure the smtp front end to accept messages
only from the BE you can raise the security and performance level, by avoid
relay, by example.

Indeed. |
Just create another VSI on the Exchange box and give it an internal
address that external addresses can't get to and grant relay
permissions to the box(es) you need.

Hi,
Thank you for your post!
It seems that you want to set the Front-End server as the relay server. It
should be working if the Front-End server allow relay from the IIS server.
For security consideration, you can set IP Relay Restriction on the
Front-End server:
- Open Default SMTP Virtual Server properties on the Front-End server.
- Click Access tab and click Relay button.
- Add the IP address in the Only the list below section.
The disadvantage I can see is there is not fault tolerant. If the Front-End
is down, the outbound mail will break.
I hope it helps. Please feel free to let me know if you have any problems!
Thanks & regards,
Wen Sun
