Hello,

I've spun my wheels for a week now trying to get this to work with no luck.
There are only 3 servers in this network; one is the 2003 SP1 AD domain
controller also running DNS/WINS/DHCP while the other is the ISA 2004 SP1
firewall and the last one is the Exchange 2003 SP2 running in native mode.

I have inbound mail working just fine, but I cannot seem to get outbound
mail working for the life of me. I have an MX record created thru network
solutions referencing our static public ip address. I have setup the mail
publishing rule in ISA for Exchange and I am able to telnet into the SMTP
port on the Exchange server. I have run the SMTPDiag tool and it fails when
checking the MX servers for the receiving email address, in this case my
hotmail account. Here's the error the SMTPDiag tool provides, and I've
tried to send to many many other valid smtp email addresses.

Connecting to the server failed. Error: 10051
Failed to submit mail to mx4.hotmail.com.

Anyone help on this one?

Thx,
Gaylen

Does it just hang in the Queue on the Exchange Server or does it leave the
Exchange server and get bounced back?

Can you describe your Network a little more? Are you sending directly to
the internet or are you using a gateway for outbound mail?

Hi Jonathan,

The messages hang in the queue on the server until it fails after about a
day of retries.

Our network is setup with an ISA 2004 server with 2 NICs, one with the
public ip address and the other is the internal ip address. That internal
ip address is the gateway / router ip address used in my DHCP scope for our
network. I do not have a SMTP service running on that server. In fact the
only SMTP server on the network right now is the Exchange 2003 SP2 server,
which is running as a SecureNAT client on the network along with the other
servers on the network.

So, the Exchange server is setup to route mail directly using DNS and
configured with our ISPs DNS servers. There is no SMARTHOST configured to
forward the SMTP traffic.

Thx,
Gaylen

Try this:
1- On the Exchange server open a command prompt
2- type "nslookup"
3- type "set type=mx"
4- type "hotmail.com"

What is the result ?

Everything looks to be in order after running your list of commands from the

Here's the output from the screen you asked for...

Also you may be interested in knowing our internal DNS scheme is following
the .local domain name extension rather than .com. So, our our servers
fqdn's are servername.companyname.local. I'm not sure if that has something
to do w/ this problem or not but I'm starting to wonder.
