Substitute Information Store |
|
|
I'm going through a practice disaster recovery exercise that
assumes a total loss of my client's Small Business 2003 Server.
I have rebuilt the server on a different hardware platform
and I now wish to use the backed up Exchange information
store. Just copying the backed up MDBData folder to the
newly created MDBData folder (while all Exchange services
are shut down) does not appear to work - the information
store won't mount.
How can I get Exchange to use the backed up information
store?

Well it wouldn't. You don't have the checkpoint, the logs etc.
Restore the IS, not the MDB. Use the RSG for speed.

Thanks for your reply.
I thought the MDBData contained all files pertaining to the
Information Store. Your answer suggests that this is not so.
Where are the other items kept?
I looked at RSG but I can't see how it can work in my
scenario. If I have a server meltdown then I can no longer
use exmerge.exe to create .PST files.
Phrasing it another way: I am looking for an effective method
to rebuild an Exchange Data Store from a set of backed up
files, with no access to the server that once ran Exchange.
My experience with Exchange is rather limited, hence some
detailed instructions would be appreciated.

Hi,
Make an extra copy of your MDBDATA dir (as backup) and run eseutil /g and
eseutil /p on the databases you wish to restore. When this completed you
should be able to mount the databases.

Disaster Recovery means that you DON'T have access to the MDBDATA folder. So
how are you going to restore from it?
Backup the system state.
Backup the Exchange server using an Exchange aware backup system such as
ntbackup or Backup Exec.
Build the Exchange box as per live box, restore the system state, restore
the DB.
MDBDATA is the physical store. You'd then be missing the checkpoint file,
logs, directory, user accounts etc.

Thanks for your reply. The Restore-Exchange-Server
link was extremely useful - by following it verbatim I
was able to mount the information store (after ticking
the box "This database can be overwritten by a restore".)
Unfortunately I am not quite there yet, because I haven't
found a way to link users on the rebuilt server with
their existing mail boxes. When I create a new user, e.g.
JSmith then a new mail box "JSmith" is created for that
user, side by side with his existing box "JSmith". I shall
now spend some time studying the other links you quoted.

Re: Substitute Information Store |

Problem solved. Here is briefly what I did:
- Follow the advice provided in the Tutorial link you quoted.
- Allow the databases to be overwritten by a restore.
- Delete duplicated mail boxes.
- Run the Clean-up agent.
- Reconnect each mail box to its matching Windows account.
Thanks to everyone for their help - much appreciated!
