Can anyone tell me if uninstalling SMTP and then reinstalling it will affect
the Exchange Server? I am having strange problems relating to dropped emails
and the SMTP seems to be the cause. I cannot load SP2 for Exchange - it
errors at the SMTP subgroup part of the installation.

Before removing anything have you just tried doing the repair using the
install CD and then reinstall your service packs.? Also, you may want to
give some more detail regarding this since dropped email can come from a
number of things. When the drops happen is there anything in the event log?
Have you turned up the logging levels to make sure you are getting all the
info you can? Anyway, I might just try the repair first and see if that
works.

Are you talking about doing a repair on the Exchange 2003 installation?

I have checked the logs for the dropped messages to no avail.

I have also eliminated the possibility that the firewall, antivirus /
antispam have been causing the problem (by turning off the services and
experiencing the problem).

The only thing that seemed to be a temporary fix (or coincident) was when I
created a new smtp connector under the protocols of Exchange Admin.
